Wavelength Online FAQ
Everything people ask before their first game — whether Wavelength Online is free, how many players you need, what devices work, and how scoring works.
Wavelength Online is a free browser game you can start in seconds, with no download and no sign-up. If you are brand new, begin with the full how-to-play guide; otherwise the answers below cover almost everything a first-time group wants to know.
Basics
Getting started with Wavelength Online
The essentials for getting a group into a first game.
Is Wavelength Online free?
Yes. Wavelength Online is completely free. It runs entirely in your browser with no account, no download, and no payment — and there are no ads or in-app purchases to unlock the full game.
Do I need to download anything or sign up?
No. There is nothing to install and no account to create. Open the page on any phone, tablet, or computer and start playing right away — one device is passed around the group.
How many players do I need?
Four or more works best, split into two teams. You can play with two or three, but the guessing and betting are more fun with a few voices on each side reading the clue together.
What devices and browsers work?
Any modern browser on a phone, tablet, or computer — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge. JavaScript needs to be enabled, which it is by default, so there is no setup.
Gameplay
Playing a round
How a turn plays out, and how points are won.
What is the goal of the game?
Each round, one team tries to land a guess as close as possible to a hidden target on a spectrum between two opposite ideas. Points add up over turns, and the first team to 10 wins.
Can I play Wavelength Online on my phone?
Yes. The dial is built for touch — drag the pointer with your finger — and the layout adapts to small screens, so a single phone passed around the group is all you need.
How long does a game take?
A full game to 10 points usually runs ten to fifteen minutes, which makes it easy to play a few rounds back to back or fit one in while you wait for food to arrive.
How do you win, and how does scoring work?
Teams alternate turns and score by how close each guess lands: 4 for a bullseye, then 3, 2, or 0. The opposing team can earn a catch-up point on a correct left-or-right bet. The first team to 10 points wins. The how-to-play guide breaks this down step by step.
What makes a good clue?
Something specific enough to place on the spectrum but not so obvious it gives everything away, using a reference the whole group shares. For Cold ↔ Hot with the target near the warm end, "a fresh cup of coffee" beats "warm."
Is there sound, and can I mute it?
Yes, there are light synthesized sound effects for tuning, locking in, and the reveal. Tap the speaker icon in the top corner of the game to mute or unmute, and your choice is remembered on that device.
Can I play with two people or solo?
You can. With two players it works best as a cooperative challenge — see how many bullseyes you can chain together — rather than the full head-to-head team game.
Can I play Wavelength Online with friends over video call?
Yes. Share one person's screen on the call and let each team say where to drag the pointer. Because the whole game lives on a single shared page, screen-sharing over any video app works well for a remote game night.
Good to know
More about Wavelength Online
A few extra questions that come up once you have played a round or two.
How is Wavelength Online different from the board game?
The tabletop party game needs a physical dial, a screen, and a box on the table. Wavelength Online keeps the same core — a hidden target, one clue, a team guess, and a left-or-right bet — but replaces the hardware with a single web page, with a new spectrum every round and automatic scoring.
Do I need an internet connection?
You need a connection to load the page the first time. After that the game runs in your browser with no server round-trip per round, so a brief drop will not interrupt your game.
Can I make my own spectrum cards?
Not in the app yet — each round draws from the built-in deck. Many groups add house rules instead, agreeing that every clue must come from movies, food, or their own friend group.
What are some example spectrums?
Rounds draw pairs like Cold ↔ Hot, Overrated ↔ Underrated, Fantasy ↔ Sci-fi, Guilty pleasure ↔ Proud of it, and Everyday ↔ Once in a lifetime. Each one hides a target somewhere between the two poles for your clue to point at.
Is Wavelength Online available as an app?
There is no separate app to install, but you can add Wavelength Online to your home screen from your browser's share menu, which opens it full-screen like an app. It stays a free web game with nothing to download.
Is it kid-friendly and good for classrooms?
Yes. The spectrums are general-audience, there are no accounts or chat, and it works well as a quick classroom warm-up or team ice-breaker.
Is this the official Wavelength game?
No. This is an independent, fan-made online tribute to the spectrum-guessing genre. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the official Wavelength board game or its publishers.
